Cloquet Wood City Classic Basketball Tournament

Click on the blog title to view pictures from the first day of the Wood City Classic tournament. The link for the second day is at the bottom of the page!

Teams in the 2009 Cloquet Wood City Basketball Tournament included St. Paul Humboldt's boys AND girls teams, East Central girls, Ashland girls, Duluth Central Boys, Blake School boys, and of course both the Cloquet Lumberjack boys and girls teams. This page is pictures from the first day of action.

A few players stood out from the rest.. including The Blake School's Kebu Johnson, who is only a freshman but plays much bigger than that.

Also St. Paul Humboldt (Section 1A St. Paul city-league team) sisters Angelina (Junior) and Annessa (senior) Hicks, who've played in the tournament together before have picked up their games each time they come to the Wood City Tournament.

Website Back.. Picture Updates This Week

Hostgator emailed and already had my domain re-setup and the website is already back up and running with everything in the right place. By the end of the coming weekend, I'll have pictures added from Cloquet boys hockey's win over Park/Cottage Grove in the Duluth Denfeld hockey tournament and pictures from both boys and girls basketball games in the annual Cloquet Wood City Classic tournament. After that, everything should be back to normal with updates each night I shoot something.

Lumberjacks, Northern Stars Tie 3-3

Click the blog title to view game photos

The Lumberjacks and Northern Stars renewed their rivalry by settling nothing at all, with a 3-3 overtime tie. The Jacks came back from a 3-1 deficit in the third period, with goals by Jessie Ryan and Courtney Esse (shorthanded game tying goal.) Nikki Logergren opened the scoring for Duluth in the first period, and Callie Halverson tied the game in the second period buring a 1 timer during a 5 on 3 powerplay. Halverson's goal was answered with goals by Rosie Nelson, and Frankie Bergman to build the 3-1 lead after 2 periods. Cloquet's Melissa Clark had a shot to win the game at the very end of ovetime, burying the puck as the clock ticked to 0:00 but the goal was waved off by the referee saying time ran out, thus ending the game in the 3-3 tie.

Lumberjacks, Lightning, Skate to 3-3 Tie

Click the blog title to view all my shots from the game

Cloquet (CEC) and GRG (Rapids/Greenway) skated to a tie 3-3 tonight (December 1, 2009).. 1-1 after 1 period, 3-1 CEC after 2 periods and 3-3 after GRG ties the game with 6:59 left in the third. The Lumberjacks killed off a 5 on 3 powerplay in OT, on two tripping penalties 30 seconds apart, then of course the Lightning went shorthanded but the Lumberjack spent some of their powerplay in their own zone.

Sarah Gustafson came up HUGE in net for the Jacks the end of the third period and overtime, stopping 2 breakaways and then doing the splits across the crease to stop a great scoring chance on the 5 on 3. A Molly Illikainen goal was sandwiched by two Dana Gallop goals for the Lightning, while CEC got goals by Jessie Ryan, Savannah Hanson, and Melissa Clark.

The Lumberjack boys held their own against a tough Virignia Blue Devils team through 2 and 1/2 periods being down only 1-0 and putting a lot of shots on the Virginia net.  Two defensive lapses allowed Virginia to put the game away, scoring two goals in the final 7 minutes of the third period.

08-09 Class AA Stillwater Girls Hockey Storms Through Duluth, Cloquet

The #1 ranked Stillwater Ponies, class AA State Champions for 08-09 rolled through the Duluth Heritage Sports Center and Cloquet Area Recreational Center (CARC) this past weekend, beating the Duluth Northern Stars 5-0, and CEC Lumberjacks 5-1.  While the Northern Stars game was pretty lopsided, the CEC game wasn't decided until Stillwater turned their game way up in the third period, extending a 2-1 two period lead to the 5-1 victory over the 'Jacks.

Stillwater's Amanda Cartony scored 3 goals between the two games

Janessa Philipczyk scored a goal each night

Goaltender Marah Sobczak (making this save) allowed just one goal in two games
