Cloquet Girls Shut Out Lightning

Alyssa Acheson needed just one goal, an unassisted first period goal by Jessie Ryan, to defeat Section 7AA rival Grand Rapids/Greenway Lightning 1-0 at the CARC, January 20, 2011. Acheson stopped all 22 shots she faced in the shutout, while Lightning goaltender Sydney Helmbrecht was nearly as good, stopping 23 of 24.

Ryan's goal at 10:18 was a great individual effort, first putting a hard wrist shot on Helmbrecht, then burying the rebound into an open net with the GRG goaltender sprawled on the ice. Both teams penalty kill was superb, keeping each other scoreless on 3 powerplays.

The Lumberjacks started the Mike Bushey era as head coach with a complete game, beating Forest Lake 2-1 at the CARC. After no scoring in the first two periods, the teams combined for three third period goals. A Callie Halverson wrist shot that deflected off the defense with 4:28 remaining gave the 'Jacks the 2-1 lead, and 25 Katie Beckman saves helped secure the win in the season opener. Caitlin Lilly scored on a rebound at 5:20 to tie the game at 1 after Forest Lakes Audrey Hanmer had given the Rangers the lead 2:23 into the third period. The Rangers Abbie White took the loss, despite stopping 40 of 42 Cloquet shots.

Lumberjacks, Lightning, Skate to 3-3 Tie

Click the blog title to view all my shots from the game

Cloquet (CEC) and GRG (Rapids/Greenway) skated to a tie 3-3 tonight (December 1, 2009).. 1-1 after 1 period, 3-1 CEC after 2 periods and 3-3 after GRG ties the game with 6:59 left in the third. The Lumberjacks killed off a 5 on 3 powerplay in OT, on two tripping penalties 30 seconds apart, then of course the Lightning went shorthanded but the Lumberjack spent some of their powerplay in their own zone.

Sarah Gustafson came up HUGE in net for the Jacks the end of the third period and overtime, stopping 2 breakaways and then doing the splits across the crease to stop a great scoring chance on the 5 on 3. A Molly Illikainen goal was sandwiched by two Dana Gallop goals for the Lightning, while CEC got goals by Jessie Ryan, Savannah Hanson, and Melissa Clark.
