Down 8-13, Esko ran off 7 straight points to win the 5th and final game in a 3 games to 2 Section 7AA Semi-final volleyball win over Hibbing, in Grand Rapids, November 2, 2011. It looked early, like Esko was going to beat Hibbing in 3 straight games, when they went up 2 games to 0. The Eskomos had to work in the first game, down 11-17 at one point. They outscored Hibbing 14-6 to finish the game 25-23, including runs from 11-17 to 14-17 and 14-18 to 20-18.

Esko trailed only at 2-3 in the second game, and their largest lead of the game was 9-4, winning this one 25-21.

The third game was back and forth, though Esko was down 4-9 they battled back and tied the match at every point but 20's and 22's from 16's to 26's but dropped the final two points to 26-28.

In the fourth game, Hibbing built a lead, from 8-8 to 12-20 before Esko made their move, closing the sore to 21-22, and only losing the game 23-25.

Game five, as mentioned, saw Esko come back from 8-13 down, led by Stephanie Bandelin hitting, and an Amanda Bisel kill that rolled nearly half the length along the tape on top of the net before dropping to the floor on the Hibbing side, that gave Esko match point 14-13. With the 15-13 final game win, Esko faces Mora in the 7AA volleyball final at Duluth Denfeld, November 5, 2011.

UMD Men’s Hockey Thumps Bemidji 6-2

UMD fell behind Friday night, 2-0 on goals by Bemidji's Brad Hunt and Jordan George just 1:05 apart at 6:21 and 7:26. Wade Bergman got UMD back into the game 55 seconds later, at 8:21, when he skated in from the blue line to punch in a rebound after a flurry of attempts including a JT Brown shot point blank. Jack Connolly also got an assist on Bergman's first goal of the year. UMD used it's timeout at 12:34 of the second period, likely needing a quick breather after the Bergman goal then an unsuccessful powerplay. The quick break worked, as JT Brown scored at 13:24, putting a Chris Casto rebound into an open Bemidji net with goaltender Andrew Walsh trying to dive back to his net, to no avail.

Keegan Flaherty stuffed a rebound of his own shot past Walsh, at 8:15 of the second period, from Dan DeLisle, to give UMD a 3-2 lead, his 3rd goal of the season after 0 goals his first two Bulldog seasons. Casto then scored his first Bulldog goal, from Caleb Herbert and Justin Crandall at 9:32 of the period.

With the Bulldogs on cruise control in the third period, Brady Lamb scored at 7:11 from Travis Oleksuk and Jack Connolly, and Connolly scored his second of the season, from Bergman at 11:07 for the final 6-2 tally.

Kenny Reiter held his ground after the two Bemidji goals, stopping 15 of 17 total shots while Walsh stopped 34 of 40 Bulldog shots in the loss.

Cloquet Volleyball Drops 5 Game Thriller to Hermantown

The Lumberjacks and Hawks played what was for the most part, a completely even 5 game volleyball match in Hermantown, October 18, 2011. The 'Jacks dropped the 5 game match 3 to 2 but had a great shot to win the fifth game.

Cloquet took the first point of game one and didn't look back that game, with leads of 6-1, 12-3, and 17-7. Hermantown battled back to get within 22-17 but the 'Jacks finished game one with a 25-18 win.

Game two started close, with a 6-6 score, but that quickly became 6-19 with Hermantown going on a big run to take control of the second game, and winning that 25-13.

Cloquet took the third game 25-20, starting with a 2-1 lead, that because a 5-6 deficit, but a run to 10-6 built enough lead that they held on throughout, with Hermantown cutting it to 16-13 and 17-14 but not getting closer than those three points.

Hermantown won game four with an identical 25-20 score to Cloquet's game three win, though Cloquet took a 15-14 lead midway through the game, the Hawks outscored them 11-5 from that point. The fifth game was just as tight, with both teams exchanging points, with the game tied at 10's, 11's, 12's, 13's, 14's and 15's and 16's. The 'Jacks lead 14-13 but weren't able to win that match point. They battled back from 14-15 and 15-16 to tie at 16's but dropped the final 2 points to finish down 16-18.

Finally, A Blog Update

With the busy fall season happening, I haven’t gotten around to posting a blog update of games shot, but here comes one!

This past week I cleaned up the front page of viewthroughmylens.net be creating a separate high schools page with links to the Cloquet, Barnum, Carlton, Esko, and Duluth Northern Stars pages rather than having 5 separate links on the front page of the website.  Now you click the high schools link and choose which school you want to look for pictures of.

I shot a bunch of CEC Lumberjacks boys soccer early in their season and a couple Cloquet girls soccer, including their rivalry matchup 2-1 loss at Esko/Carlton.
