UMD Hockey Rallies Against Michigan Tech

For the first 39 minutes on Friday, UMD peppered Michigan Tech goaltender Josh Robinson with shot after shot but couldn't put the puck behind him. Tech had a 2-0 lead on first period goals by Brett Olson and Milos Gordic. At 19:04 of the second period, Justin Fontaine finally got the 'Dogs on the board, getting through the Tech defenses to bury the rebound of a Justin Faulk shot from the circle. The spark from that goal carried to the third period, when Fontaine scored again, on a shorthanded hustle, diving to the puck and sweeping it through Robinson's 5-hole as he came out to try and challenge the puck. Jack Connolly, Joe Basaraba (his first career goal), and Dan Delisle the each scored in the next 7:16 for the 'Dogs, giving them a 5-2 lead. Olson scored again for Tech at 18:11 of the third but the UMD lead was too much. UMD outshot Michigan Tech 47-17 for the game, and Tech never had more than 7 shots in any period. Wade Bergman had two assists while Jack & Mike Connolly, Justin Faulk, Mike Montgomery, Keegan Flaherty, and Mike Seidel each added a solo assist for the 'Dogs.

Esko Eskomos Lose State Tourney Match 3 Games 0

 

The Eskomos dropped their state quarterfinal match to Stewartville 3 games to 0 by scores 25-12 25-20 and 25-18.  Check back for more match photos on Friday with a link to photos on my website.  MSHSL rules dictate that State Tournament game photos may not be made available for sale to the public.

The Esko Eskomos rolled to the Section 7AA Championship over Hermantown, with a dominating 3 games 0 win at UMD's Romano Gym. The Eskomos won by scores of 25-16, 25-12, 25-17, in front of most of the town of Esko.

Both the Barnum Bombers (7A) and Moose Lake/Willow River Rebels (7AA) took care of business, winning their respective section finals at Duluth’s Public School’s Stadium to head to the State Tournament. Barnum defeated East Central 20-7 with two rushing touchdowns by Josh Hogan, and one by Hector Chavez. The Rebels defeated the Braham Bombers 35-8, though only let 7-0 at halftime. Chris Gassert and Jake Disterhaupt ran for two touchdowns apiece, and the Rebel defense shut down a 4th quarter passing surge by the Braham offense after it scored and recovered an onside kick with the score 28-8.

The 2010 Section 7AA semifinals saw Esko end Hibbing's 7 year reign as section champion 3 games to 0 and Hermantown avenge 2 losses in a row to the Lumberjacks 3 games to 0 in a doubleheader at Romano Gym on the campus of Minnesota-Duluth.

UMD Football Beats St. Cloud 40-17 on Senior Day

The UMD football team celebrated "Senior Day" by beating the St. Cloud State Huskies 40-17 at Molasky Stadium in Duluth. The Bulldogs used a 20 point surge in the third quarter, capped by a Rob Huberty fumble recovery for a touchdown, caused by a Kiel Fechtelkotter quarterback sack. to break open a 13-10 halftime score.  David Nadeau kicked two field goals for UMD, Collin Stinogel caught a 40 yard td, D.J. Windfield caught a 28 yard touchdown pass, Brad Foss ran for a 4 yard touchdown, as did Chase Vogler for UMD’s other scoring for the game.

The Lumberjacks started a bit slow, going down 11-3 in the first game, before rallying to win game 1, then played tough the next two games to win the playoff opener against Proctor 3 games to 0 in Cloquet, October 27, 2010.

UMD Men’s Hockey Sweeps Alaska Anchorage

The UMD men's hockey team finished a series sweep of Alaska Anchorage with a 6-0 win on Saturday, October 23rd. Travis Oleksuk scored the first of his two goals, just 50 seconds into the first period, and that goal was the only goal of the period. Justin Fontaine gave UMD a 2-0 lead with a powerplay goal 3:43 into the second period, and Dan DeLisle scored his first career goal at 17:16. Kyle Schmidt added a goal in the third period, giving UMD a 4-0 lead. Oleksuk scored his second goal at 9:21, and DeLisle scored his second with 4 seconds left in the game to give UMD the final 6-0 score. Keegan Flaherty, and J.T. Brown each had two assists for the 'Dogs, while Oleksuk, Schmidt, Jack Connolly, Mike Connolly, and Mike Siedel each had solo assists. Aaron Crandall got the shutout for the 'Dogs, his second win of the season in as many starts.

I’m not shooting EVERY UMD men’s hockey game, but will shoot the occasional ‘Dogs game, especially when it’s a doubleheader day with the UMD women playing before.

Joe Singpiel caught 3 Kellin Lamirande touchdown passes as the Jacks rallied late to beat Hibbing. Singpiel also caught a key 4th and 10 pass for a first down and 30 yard gain that set up the game winning score. Lamirande ran for a 22 yard touchdown in the final 35 seconds as the 'Jacks got the ball one final time after the defense shut down Hibbing's final drive.

Duluth Clydesdales Beat Dryden 4-3

The Clydesdales picked up their first home win, with a 4-3 victory over the Dryden Ice Dogs, at Heritage Center, October 10, 2010. The Clydesdales got goals from Tom Paine in the first period, Keith Tomassoni and Dane Morin in the second, and another goal (the game winner) from Tomassoni in the third period. Jeff Dunaisky picked up the win for the Clydesdales. 

#2 Ranked UMD Volleyball Beats Bemidji 3-1

UMD defeated Bemidji State University 3 games 1, winning the first game 25-13, dropping game two 20-25, then coming out of the break to win the final two games 25-21 and 25-13.

Cloquet (CEC) Boys Soccer Defeats Proctor 2-1 in Overtime

The Lumberjacks got a measure of revenge October 7th, on the Proctor Rails, who defeated them 2-0 to open the season in August. Proctor took a 1-0 lead late in the first half on a Donovan DeBartolo goal off a rebound of a long scoring attempt. Landen Straub didn't let the Jacks stay behind long into the second half, putting a ball off the post and goalkeeper only only 36 seonds into the second half to tie the match at 1. Neither team scored the rest of the second half, despite Proctor losing a player to a red card and playing with 10 including their goalkeeper. With 1:47 remaining in the first overtime, Sam Longseth got in the way of a Proctor clearing attempt in front of their net, knocking the ball in to put the Jacks ahead 2-1. Neither team scored again, giving the Lumberjacks their split of regular season games with Proctor.

Duluth Clydesdales Lose Home Opener Via Shootout

The Clydesdales and Wilderness tied 4-4 at the end of overtime in the Duluth Clydesdales home debut at Heritage Center, October 3, 2010. The Wilderness won the best of five attempt shootout after the overtime period.
