On May 19th, I shot a few innings each of Esko Baseball and Softball in Esko. The Eskomos baseball team faced McGregor, while the softball team faced Duluth Central.

Cloquet Baseball Tops Denfeld 7-4

Cloquet defeated Duluth Denfeld 7-4 at Wade Stadium, May 18, 2010. The Lumberjacks gave up a run in the first and second innings, finally tying the game at 2 in the fifth inning. Denfeld regained the lead in the 6th inning, but the Lumberjack bats woke up in the 7th inning, putting 5 runs on the board. Denfeld scored one run in the 7th then stranded runners on second and third as the game ended. Adam Hanson pitched the complete game for the Lumberjacks, his third win of the season.

UMD Softball Sweeps Bemidji State Beavers

The final two games of the NSIC regular season, at Bemidji State, were moved to Duluth due to heavy rains in Bemidji, making Bemidji the home team at Juction Avenue Field on the UMD campus. The Beavers put up a battle the first game, taking a 3-3 tie into the 7th inning, where UMD's Val Hartel scored the go-ahead, and winning, run on an Ashley Johnson sac fly. UMD pitcher Kristin Danielson set the Bulldog career strikeouts record with a strikeout in the 6th inning. UMD dominated the second game, winning 9-0 in 6 innings, while getting 6 perfect innings (18 batters, 18 outs) from pitcher Heather Stemper. Stemper's performance included 6 strike outs, 6 ground outs, and 6 fly outs. UMD picked up a home run from Sarah Kabes in the 9-0 win.

Cloquet Softball Loses to Duluth East 2-0
Duluth East beat the Lumberjacks 2-0 on the Greyhounds all-turf field, April 20, 2010. The Lumberjacks twice had the bases loaded with a chance to to drive in runs but stranded the runners both times. Despite the loss, the jacks got a good pitching effort from Haley Sobczak and strong defense behind their pitcher(s) for the third straight game.

Cloquet Softball Beats Esko In 11th Inning

The Lumberjacks and Eskomos needed 11 innings to decide an outcome to the high school softball game at Braun Park, April 19, 2010. In the 8th, Esko scored two runs, which Cloquet answered, led by Courtney Esse and Lizz Jezeriski hits. Denise Rodd held Esko scoreless the next three innings to bring up Esse again, who was bunted over on a sacrifice by Jezierski, and scored the game winning run on a hit by Shania Paulson. Rodd went the distance for Cloquet, in her first varsity pitching start, for the win.

Kristin Danielson and Heather Stemper each held the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs to one run in their respecitve games to lead UMD to a 3-1 and 4-1 sweep in Duluth, April 18, 2010. Ashley Johnson (game 1) and Coley Gale (game 2) each had a home run for UMD in the sweep.

The Thunder softball bats continued to smoke as the Thunder swept Northland CC 21-1 and 11-3 for their second doubleheader sweep in as many days.

Thunder Softball Thumps Vermillion CC
Lisa Muehlberger and the rest of the Thunder's bats caught fire, hammering Vermillion CC 9-1 and 16-1 in mercy rule shortened games at Braun Park, April 9, 2010. Pitcher Dana Letica threw all of both games to earn both wins.

Since My Last Update
Since the last update, more than three weeks ago, I've shot:
Minnesota-Duluth Women's hockey team Wins National Championship in THREE OVERTIMES vs Cornell Big red
And now the area college (and soon high school) softball and baseball seasons are starting to take shape....
The UMD women's softball team swept St. Cloud in Duluth, March 31st.. the earliest ever on campus start to the season.
The FDLTCC Thunder softball team started their regular season losing two to Rainy River CC
Also the UMD Bulldogs baseball team took the field earlier than ever this season, I shot games April 7th against Minnesota-State Mankato

Braham, Rush City Win Section 7AA Semi-Finals

The Section 7AA boys basketball semi-finals took place at Romano Gym on the campus of Minnesota-Duluth, March 17, 2010. Braham used a strong second half to pull away from Deer River, while Rush City beat Virginia in a great game in front of a lively crowd from both towns.
